The MATE Festival presents the Cine Concerto “A Central do Brasil”, an unprecedented show for Portuguese and European audiences, which crosses the Atlantic to be the first major confirmation of the MATE Festival 2024.

On October 21, Antonio Pinto and Jaques Morelenbaum, composers of the original soundtrack for the 1998 Brazilian film, will join the Orquestra Clássica do Centro to present an unprecedented show in the Grand Auditorium of the Convento São Francisco in Coimbra. The classic Brazilian film by Walter Salles will be shown in its entirety, with the original dialog and sound effects, while the soundtrack is played live. This screening, the first and only one of its kind outside Brazil, brings together artists from various generations in Portugal and Brazil, with the collaboration of Anselmo Mancini, the ALMAI-SP String Quartet and conductor Flávio Lago. This is an unmissable opportunity to experience a work of great cultural impact, which consecrated Fernanda Montenegro as the only Latin American actress - and the only one to act in Portuguese - to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.

Cine Concerto Central do Brasil is the first cineconcerto based on a Brazilian sound film. This project was conceived by Anselmo Mancini, who developed all the technology for the show and transcribed the original music from the film. Mancini is a reference in the production of cineconcerts in Brazil, having produced the live soundtrack for films such as “The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain”, “Dreams”, “Psycho”, “The Exorcist”, “Blade Runner”, among others. As musical director of the Cine Concerto Central do Brasil, he adds to his CV another production that has been widely acclaimed by the Brazilian press.

These big names in Brazilian music are joined by the 24-year experience of the Orquestra Clássica do Centro, one of Portugal's most renowned orchestras and a key player in classical music in the Central Region of the country. The mastery of the ALMAI-SP String Quartet (Alessandro Oliveira, Marcela Sarudiansky, Catarina Rossi and Jonatas Pereira) and the artistry of renowned Brazilian conductor Flávio Lago, who will conduct the ensemble throughout the cineconcert, complete the cast.
